Gays should have the right to wed
This weekend, I am going to do it for the first time. I am going to my first homosexual wedding ceremony.
Now, the word “ceremony” is key because no matter how much meaning it will have for the two women exchanging vows — it’s just another day as usual for 48 states, including Georgia.
The only thing needed to dissolve their marriage is a word.
The idea of legal gay marriages may sound riduculous to some — as crazy as women’s sufferage or desegregated schools — but legitimizing these marriages would benefit the couple as well as the government.
Just like the wild notion of women’s voting rights, the government must recognize the oppression of a civil liberty and make the changes needed to unblock it.
Refusing the legal recognition of same-sex marriages discriminates against people on the basis of sexual orientation by denying them the marital privileges and benefits to which other couples are entitled.
Current laws prevent homosexual couples from reaping corporate benefits via their spouses.
Because same sex marriges are recognized in Hawaii and Vermont the Full-Faith and Credit clause in the constitution requires that other states honor these unions.
Yet, since the decisions in Hawaii and Vermont, the other 48 states have passed legislation which refuses to recognize these marriages.
This translates to legitimate couples in the majority of the country that are not recieving access to marital insurance benefits, sick leave for care of spouses and bereavement leave.
