United chief says Hawaii a strong market
Hawaii is getting stronger and is performing above average for United Airlines’ domestic system, according to the carrier’s chief executive.
One of United’s best-performing markets is the Pacific, said Glenn Tilton, chairman, president and CEO of United and its parent, UAL Corp. Hawaii, as the prime domestic Pacific destination, is helping to drive that, he said Tuesday.
In the U.S. market, Hawaii is well above other destinations in market growth, seats filled per flight and customer satisfaction, he said Tuesday during a Hawaii stopover en route to Tokyo.
“For us, it’s a tremendous opportunity to go from strength to strength,” he said.
United, which has more than 1,500 employees in the islands, represents about 25% of the Hawaii market.
Tilton said he had a good exchange of views with Gov. Linda Lingle during a meeting Tuesday that lasted more than an hour. He also met with legislative leaders.
He said he and Lingle talked about collaborating on a possible promotional campaign to boost travel to the islands, but said the impetus for that would have to come from Hawaii as major tourist market, not United as a commercial business working that market.
The campaign could be similar to an October promotional project called “Visit Hong Kong Month” sponsored by United, the Hong Kong government and other companies, he said.
“It was very successful, and we want to work with destinations, both business and leisure, in creating similar stimulation for travel,” Tilton said.
Tilton took over United in September 2002, just a few months before it went into bankruptcy reorganization. Now things are looking up and the airline is very efficient, he said.
Tilton said he expects UAL to come out of bankruptcy in a more positive situation than it has been for years.
